MILWAUKIE, Ore.– From the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office
Deputies Shot and in Stable Condition
On June 30th, 2023, at approximately 7AM, two uniformed deputies from the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a report of a burglary of a business in progress in SE 70th Ave and SE Johnson Creek Blvd.
The deputies arrived and found two males at the scene. As the deputies attempted to detain the suspects for questioning, one of the suspects drew a pistol and opened fire on the deputies. Both deputies were struck by gunfire and at least one was able to return fire. Neither suspect was shot. The suspects were apprehended a few minutes later by additional responding deputies. Both wounded deputies were evacuated from the scene and transported to an area hospital where they are undergoing treatment. Their injuries, while serious, are not reported to be life threatening.
The two arrested suspects have been identified as:
- TYLER J. SCOTT, a 32-year-old male of SE Portland
- JOSEPH R. SHAFFER, a 46-year-old male also of SE Portland.
Both have been transported to the Clackamas County Jail. It is anticipated that they will be charged and arraigned on Monday.
The investigation into the attempted murder of the deputies and officer-involved use of force is being led by the Clackamas Interagency Major Crimes team and detectives from the Oregon City and West Linn Police Departments. Detectives from Canby Police, Lake Oswego Police, Gladstone Police, Oregon State Police Molalla Police, Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office, and the FBI and AFT have responded as well to assist.
