LONGVIEW, Wa.–Longview Police Chief Robert Huhta graduates from FBI National Academy Chief Robert Huhta graduated as a member of the 285th session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, on March 16, 2023. The 285th session class consisted of two hundred and forty-seven law enforcement officers representing 47 states and the District of Columbia, 28 countries, four military organizations, and five federal civilian organizations. Chief Huhta is the first officer in the department in over 20 years to complete this prestigious program. Nationally, fewer than one percent of officers have the opportunity to attend the program.
Internationally known for its academic excellence, the National Academy offers ten weeks of advanced communication, leadership, and fitness training. Participants must have proven records as professionals within their agencies to attend. On average, these officers have 21 years of law enforcement experience and usually return to their agencies to serve in executive-level positions.
Manager Swanson said, “Chief Huhta is a highly respected leader in our organization who has demonstrated commitment and professionalism throughout his service to the City of Longview. His participation in the FBI National Academy will significantly benefit the Longview Police Department. Chief Huhta has served as the Chief of the Longview Police Department since December 2020. He began working for the Department in 1996 as a college Cadet. He has been a Community Services Officer, Reserve Officer, Officer, Detective, Sergeant, and Captain.
Chief Huhta stated, “I am grateful for this phenomenal experience at the National Academy. Over the ten weeks, I was able to network with an incredible group of law enforcement leaders from around the world. We had robust discussions regarding the challenges facing our profession and the community. As leaders it is important to continuously seek learning opportunities. I am thankful for the support of my family, the department, City of Longview, and the FBI to allow me this opportunity.”

FBI Academy instructors, special agents, and other staff with advanced degrees provide the training, and many instructors are recognized internationally in their fields. Since 1972, National Academy students have earned undergraduate and graduate credits from the University of Virginia, which accredits many of the Academy courses. A total of 54,154 graduates have completed the FBI National Academy since it began in 1935. The National Academy is held at the FBI Training Academy in Quantico, the same facility where the FBI trains its new special agents and intelligence analysts.
