HILLSBORO, Ore.–In a solemn and heartfelt ceremony, many gathered today at Liberty High School to pay their respects to Lt. Carl Horning, a dedicated member of Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue (TVF&R) and the broader Oregon fire service. Hundreds of people including family and friends, fellow firefighters, and public officials joined together to commemorate Lt. Horning.
The memorial service was a poignant occasion marked by reflection and shared memories. The event began with a procession led by TVF&R apparatus with support from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. The procession began at Station 64, where Carl was assigned, to Liberty High School. Members of Lt. Horning’s family were accompanied on Engine 64 during the procession. When they arrived, an honor corridor of fire service and law enforcement personnel escorted the family into the high school.
The ceremony began with an Honor Guard presentation and TVF&R’s pipes and drums band. Remarks were made by TVF&R Fire Chief Deric Weiss, Lt. Horning’s close friend Jake Frank, as well as IAFF Local 1660 Secretary-Treasurer Dallas Haynes.
“You are going to have a very hard time finding as solid a human being anywhere in the world as Carl Horning. He would give you the shirt off his back. He was there to support you, help you, and be with you – and he would do it with a smile on his face,” Chief Weiss said.
During the ceremony, District personnel presented Lt. Horning’s family with his fire helmet and a shadowbox containing his service memorabilia. The Honor Guard also presented a challenge coin and American flag to Lt. Horning’s wife. To help close out the ceremony, the Washington County Consolidated Communications Agency (WCCCA) broadcast a final radio message marking Lt. Horning’s end of service.
